The GloCal Health Fellowship is excited to congratulate 2017-2018 alumna Dr. Adriane Wynn on her recent NIH R01 award with a perfect score!  Dr. Wynn’s five-year award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) will evaluate the impact of antenatal screening and treatment for asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis infection to prevent preterm birth in Botswana. Preterm birth is the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide as well as the most important predictor of long-term morbidity. Given that at least 40% of preterm births may be caused by infection, this research is especially critical. Lessons learned will also inform efforts to address the high rates of preterm birth and gaps in sexually transmitted infection screening that persist in the U.S.

Dr. Wynn’s R01 research builds well on the project she did as a GloCal fellow, assessing the costs and benefits of testing and treating HIV-infected pregnant women for sexually transmitted infections in Southern Africa. Since 2020, Dr. Wynn has been an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego. She is also a Research Associate with the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership and Botswana Sexual and Reproductive Health Initiative.  Additionally in 2020, she received a K01 award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), which allowed her to study the long-term population impact of harmful alcohol use on HIV transmission and mortality in Uganda. We celebrate GloCal alumna Dr. Wynn’s many achievements!
