The World Health Organization has appointed GloCal alumnus Dr. Stephen Wandera to the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the UN Decade of Healthy Aging. With the adoption of the UN Decade of Healthy Aging (2021–2030), countries have committed to 10 years of concerted and collaborative action to improve the lives of the older people, their families and the communities in which they reside. The TAG consists of 20 members representing WHO member states across all WHO regions, who will provide advice on the monitoring and evaluation framework, prioritizing and standardizing indicators and how to improve aging and health measurement globally.
Dr. Wandera - who was a GloCal fellow in the 2019-2020 cohort - is a gerontologist and a demographer, whose research focuses on inequalities in health, social determinants of health, and access to healthcare among older persons in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa. He is both a Lecturer and the Chair of the Department of Population Studies at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Wandera’s service on this TAG is a high-level responsibility and call to serve humanity - the aging population - by representing the discourse and the experiences of the African continent.
