What We Do

The HEAL Fellowship is in its 9th year of training and transforming frontline health providers who serve in resource-denied settings as clinicians, leaders, and advocates for health equity. In 2023, the HEAL community grew and saw 205 Fellows go through the eight cohorts of the program. 22 remarkable healthcare professionals graduated from the HEAL fellowship in 2022. This cohort demonstrated extraordinary perseverance and dedicated service while providing care to patients, working in resource-denied communities, and leading critical emergency responses in 8 countries throughout the COVID pandemic.

One in three HEAL rotating physicians have taken permanent jobs in the Navajo nation since 2015. And 80% of HEAL rotating physicians continue as teachers or clinicians in resource-denied communities.

Our Model

Partner

Partner with incredible global health sites in the United States and internationally. Identify domestic and international sites with high need and commitment to serve underserved.

Select & Pair

Through a rigorous application process, select and pair US trained health professionals with front line clinicians working in low resource communities in the United States and internationally.

Train & Transform

Immersive, experiential training and mentorship over two years in person and remotely.  Fellows receive an online master’s degree through a partner institution and are regularly mentored by the HEAL faculty at UCSF and our partner sites. This allows them to grow from front line clinician to global health leaders.

Build a Community

We make the road by walking it. Anchored in values of health equity, we are a community of 15 incredible partner sites, over 100 fellows and alumni all practicing the deep solidarity to stand with marginalized populations.

Our Partners

We partner with hospitals and community programs delivering holistic and equity based health programs to the most marginalized. Our partners set the agenda for how HEAL can accompany and strengthen health equity in their communities.
